"We commit ourselves to advance the culture of life." (SHALOM document)
Around the world, School Sisters of Notre Dame and Associates form an International Network for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation. We call it SHALOM.
SHALOM is the Hebrew word for Peace. It means restoring all things to their original integrity, to the way God intends the world to be.
We work actively toward enhancing just structures that foster fullness of life and toward changing unjust structures that inhibit it. SHALOM is action-oriented.
We are educators in all we say and do and we believe that the goal of SHALOM can be accomplished by ministering for the transformation of society through the transformation of persons.
Joining voices with those who cry for justice we pray, reflect, discuss and take actions that lead to:
- reconciliation,
- solidarity with the oppressed poor,
- the promotion of human dignity and
- collaboration with ecological movements to safeguard Earth.
For many years SSNDs have seen the negative effect that international debt plays in sustaining and enhancing poverty throughout the developing world. Therefore, we have promoted debt cancellation for impoverished countries.
As SHALOM we have conducted educational workshops on human rights and the Earth Charter as well as sponsored retreats.
